Things You Should Do Right After Moving Into a New House

You`ve made it. The move is finally over and now you can enjoy your new home. It will take some time to adjust to the new surroundings, but before you know it you will feel as if you lived there since forever. There are some things that you should do right after moving into a new house, as they will make your adjusting much easier. We have made this useful guide on what exactly should you do once you arrive at your new home, and we are sure that you will love it.

Check the boxes for any damage

Inspect the boxes carefully for any possible damage of your belongings. Accidents can sometimes happen, and it is important to recognize and report the damage as soon as possible. Although you have a time frame of 9 months to report the damage, it is much easier to prove everything right after you move in. So, take photos of the damaged units and contact your moving company. The same applies if some units are missing.

Connect utilities

It would be ideal if you turned on the utilities a day or two before the move. If you did, check if everything is working properly. Turn on the heating or the AC, run the water, check the electricity. The sooner you find out that something is not working correctly the faster you will be able to fix the problem. If you did not have your utilities turned on, do it as soon as you move in.

Clean the house

An empty house if a perfect opportunity for you to clean it thoroughly. And although the house may seem clean already, you never know how detailed was the person who cleaned it. So, take out your cleaning supplies and go through the house cleaning it from floor to the ceiling. Make sure to clean the AC as a lot of dust can be inside the device. Once you finish, you will know for sure that everything is spotless and you will be able to start unpacking.

Take photos of the house

If you are renting the place, and you have just moved in, this is a good time to take photos of any damaged places in the house. It will be great for your deposit, as you will have proof that the house was in the same condition when you moved in in the first place. You can do this while you are cleaning the house, so you can combine these two activities easily.

Unpack the essentials

Packed Household Goods

Once you move into your new house, the first thing that you would want to do is to get a few decent hours of sleep. The only thing getting in your way is that your linen is inside the moving boxes. In order to function properly, we recommend that you first unpack the boxes labeled bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen.

It will not take you too much time to take out the bottles of shampoo, conditioner and soap, as well as clean towels. Also, take out the pillows, blankets and linen for the bedroom, so that you can take a nap any time you want.

The kitchen essentials are a coffee pot, glasses, a couple of dishes, and a toaster. During the first day, you can even order some food in, and not worry about unpacking the entire kitchen for a proper meal.

Greet your new neighbors

A moving truck and a lot of moving boxes are always a sign that someone is moving in. So, know that your neighbors are expecting you. Some might even approach you while you are unloading the boxes, and it is a great way to break the ice. Since you will be living here for some time at least, greeting new neighbors right after moving in is an excellent idea.

Write a moving review

Moving Review

Were you satisfied with your movers? How did they handle all the aspects of the move, were they professional or rude? If you want to let other people know that you were satisfied with the provided services, write a thorough moving review. It means a lot not only to the moving company but also to the people that are perhaps in doubt whether they should hire a certain moving company. It will not take up too much of your time, and it is rather useful.

Change the locks

Changing the Locks

Safety always comes first. Whether you are renting the house or you just bought a new one for you and your family. You never know if some third party has the keys to your home and it is better not to risk it. It is always better to be safe than sorry, anyway. Secure your new home after a move – change the locks, and make copies of the keys for each member of your family. Also, check out whether the house has a security alarm, as it should work properly.

Unpack within a week

When we finally move in, time starts to go by so fast. Before we know it, three months have gone by and we still have not unpacked the boxes for the garage. The truth is, we certainly have many items that we will not use on an everyday basis, but it is important to unpack when you move in. Give yourself a deadline of seven to ten days to unpack all of your boxes. At least check them all, and decide whether you want to store them in a storage unit so that it does not occupy too much space.

We have seen the most important things that you should do right after moving in. Of course, take your time and do one thing at the time. You have arrived at your destination, and the worst part has passed. Once you check your entire house and items for any damage or something that should be fixed right away, try to relax a little bit. Play some music and finish the things from this list in a great mood. Good luck!
